Senior Farewells: Shedding Light on Graduation

By: Fiona ostermann

Many seniors across the globe have been forced to let go of their final farewell on stage, and experience throwing their caps up in the air virtually. Four years leading up to this very moment, now taken away has been a tragedy for many. Where do our seniors find the accomplishment of holding a diploma on stage? Like any situation, tradition can be carried on in an adapted way as long as we work hard to do so.

John Krasinski, former star of  The Office , now hosts a series known as Some Good News (SGN) where he not only threw a COVID-19 approved prom, but he gave 2020 graduates a graduation. Virtually, he gathered the students to give their formal farewell to the years of dedication and hard work and good wishes moving forward. Even having commencement speakers answer self-thought out questions asked students, graduates would move their tassel and take a bow.

To sum up the questions, it all came down to: “What next?” “Dreams are a great test because dreams are going to test your resolve. You’re going to know a dream from a pipedream. A real dream is something that not only hangs on to you, but you will hang onto it. And it will power you through every obstacle people and the environment will throw against you,” (said by Steven Spielberg).

Following Spielberg’s advice, Oprah Winfrey would share her testimony of success and the roots from which she grew from, “I believe that failure is an opportunity to move yourself in a different direction. It gets better because you learn the lessons for the first time.” Commencement speakers share what next is exactly the question life itself will answer.

From navigating through life with a story to looking ahead to the future, 2020 has seen the most iconic graduation. Valedictorians and all, the achievement of graduating is of high significance and celebration.
